Perry Baker had a NFL contract with the Philadelphia Eagles but suffered an injury that became the United States National Rugby Sevens’ gain. Baker played Division II football at Fairmont State University in West Virginia prior to going to the NFL. He also experienced a short career in Arena football after his stint in the NFL. However, Baker played club rugby in high school and returned to his calling years later. In 2013 he became a full-time rugby player for the Tiger Rugby Academy in Columbus, Ohio. He became a contracted member of the Eagles Sevens in July of 2014.
Forget Lebron, forget Bolt, forget Phelps – Perry Baker might be the most exciting, most electrifying athlete on show in Brazil in 2016. The 29-year-old Florida native has only been part of the USA team since 2014, but with each passing game he plays, he seems to get better and better.
In a sport full of elite athletes, Baker stands apart – he’s big, he’s strong, he’s skillful… and holy moly is he fast. When he’s in the mood, he can almost win games all by himself – as he demonstrated when scoring four tries in a single game against the mighty All Blacks at the London Sevens this year. If Baker plays to his potential in Rio, the USA will take some stopping.
