Garrett Bender began his rugby career in Minneapolis, MN during high school where he captained both the football and rugby teams for Washburn High School. He turned down football scholarship offers despite being All Conference, All Metro and one of the top tacklers in the state, after leading his rugby team to the state championship. Bender concentrated on his rugby game and was one of the early contracted players on the US National Sevens side. He also played for the Youngbloodz rugby team coached by Sam Robinson, the former Samoan rugby player. Born December 2, 1991, Bender is 6′ 4″ and weighs in at 225 lbs.
