About the Team

Flag_of_Argentina.svgArgentina was one of the first South American countries to embrace rugby. They have fielded teams in both 15s and Sevens for many years. The 15s play as part of the Southern Hemisphere nations competitions know as The Rugby Championship. It was renamed from the Tri Nations when Argentina joined and played against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa one of whom was usually ranked number one in the world.

“Argentina have been ranked as high as third in the IRB World Rankings and have twice reached the Rugby World Cup semi-finals, a higher achievement than Wales, Italy, Scotland, and Ireland among the Six Nations teams,” Wikipedia has noted.

Argentina qualified for Rio de Janeiro by winning the 2015 CONSUR Men’s Sevens Championship, the annual South American championship. The team finished the 2015/16 HSBC World Sevens Series in 5th place.

Los Pumas have been training ahead of the tournament and head coach Santiago Gómez Cora named a final roster on July 14.

“The camp in Portobello, Mangaratiba, will provide us a great opportunity to work under similar conditions to those we will encounter…”
