Akira Ioane comes from a distinguished family of ruggers. His father, Eddie, played lock for Manu Samoa in the 1991 World Cup and his mother, Sandra, formerly played for the New Zealand Women’s National Team. Ione made his debut for New Zealand Sevens in 2014, topping the season off with a World Series title. He has also competed with the Maori All Blacks, which is a New Zealand national team consisting solely of players with Maori whakapapa or native New Zealand genealogy. Speaking of an accomplished rugby family, it is not to be overlooked that he’ll be competing alongside his brother, Rieko Ioane, in Brazil.
